We’ve talked about habits of successful teachers. We’ve discussed the Habits of Mind. We’ve even discussed new currencies for 21st century learners.

We haven’t, though, talked much about the kinds of habits that create successful students. Stephen Covey, of business organization and leadership fame, has turned his “habits” shtick into an empire–one that entered the classroom years ago with his 7 habits of success students, seen below.

1. Be proactive

2. Begin with the end in mind

3. Put the first thing first

4. Think win-win

5. Seek first to understand, then be understood

6. Synergize

7. Sharpen the saw

So when Cornerstone Academy For Social Action Middle School in the Bronx mashed the energy and creative expression of hip-hop and those 7 habits in a mesmerizing celebration of both music and the mental patterns of learners–well, it became immediately relevant for us as teachers.

What an outstanding way to celebrate being young and full of potential.
