We talk often about the role of play in learning, and even the conditions necessary for play to occur, so I found this simple diagram by Jessica Hagy over at thisisindexed.com interesting, and wonderfully succinct.

As targets turn to goals, and goals turn to learning outcomes, and those outcomes become measured, and those measurements are reported as data, and that data is scrutinized, and that scrutiny is tied to everything else, creativity and innovation–products of play, and on behalf of teachers and students alike–suffer accordingly.
