How To Transfer Data to a New iPhone or iPad

A new device is the fun part. Transferring your data is now. Let’s take a look at exactly how to transfer data to a new iPhone or iPad.
Update on the device itself
- Open Settings.
- Tap General > Software Update.
- Review the version shown. If available, tap Download and Install.
- Enter your passcode if asked. Wait for the download to finish.
- Tap Install Now or choose Install Tonight while the device is on power and Wi-Fi.
Turn on automatic updates
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Download iOS/iPadOS Updates.
- Turn on Install iOS/iPadOS Updates.
- Turn on Security Responses & System Files for rapid security fixes.
Prepare before updating
- Back up with iCloud or with a computer. In iCloud: Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now.
- Charge to at least 50 percent or keep the device plugged in.
- Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
Update with a computer
- Connect the device with a USB cable.
- On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open Finder. On Windows or older macOS, open iTunes.
- Select the device. Click Check for Update.
- Click Download and Update. Follow the prompts.
Troubleshooting
- No update shown: Restart the device. Check that your model supports the target version.
- Download stuck: Go to Settings > General > iPhone/iPad Storage. Find the update. Tap Delete Update. Try again.
- Not enough space: Offload unused apps or move large photos and videos to iCloud. Use a computer to update if storage is tight.
