It looks to me like there’s no room for a space shot anymore….

    1. Paul Timmins says

Fortunately, while it looks insane, these satellites are hundreds or thousands of miles apart. I wouldn’t try to freehand my way through this belt but a computer with proper guidance data should have no problems navigating a path (we have rovers on Mars, after all)

Good points, however, since the ‘new’ thing is private space shots, there may be an instance wherein they don’t have access to the relevant data. Furthermore, the bigger issue is, what are all of those satellites doing up there?

        1. Paul Timmins says

Almost all the data is publicly available, I track amateur radio satellites all the time, for example, and every NOAA satellite is available, all the GPS and sat phone satellites are available. One doesn’t just shoot things into space without coordination – your own mission will require keplerian elements and orbital coordination information to be submitted to the various bodies (NASA, DOD, and their Russian, European, and Japanese counterparts) that make sure no collisions happen in space.

They will of course share the data with you, not just because letting you launch successfully will further the cause of science, but because if they fail to, you’ll possibly add to the collection of existing objects they have to track.

If they looked at the drawings, the aliens might think we have eyes built like telescopes. Scaling the images according to their actual size compared to the Earth, though, we (and they) would understand that space near our planet is not nearly a crowded as the artist makes it appear. But then, not too many days ago,we were convincing children that rabbits lay eggs…

Scaling the pictures as indicated by their real size contrasted with the Earth, however, we and they would comprehend that space close to our planet is not about a swarmed as the craftsman makes it show up. In any case, then, not very numerous days ago, we were persuading kids that rabbits lay eggs. It looks to me like there’s no space for a space shot any longer.
